This great trip will scoot southward along Skaha Lake, looking at rocks of the Okanagan Metamorphic and Plutonic complex. Then along Vaseux Lake, Eagle Bluff, Pine Bluff, McIntyre Bluff to Oliver. Here you will examine terraces formed in the little known but surprisingly extensive glacial Lake Oliver and a look at Tuc-el-Nuit Lake, a former kettle lake. Then a stop as close as you can get to a crevasse field near Wolfcub Creek. Then, a scenic drive along the eastern side of the valley, with a stop at “Big Rock”, then on to Osoyoos to stop at Anarchist Lookout. - a deep depression created by glacial action about 12,000 years ago as the mile high glaciers over this area began to retreat. The lake is surrounded by open rangeland and dotted with huge ponderosa pine. The 57 hectares of undulating grassland are home to an abundance of native flora and bird species such as pied-billed grebes, ruddy ducks, Barrow’s goldeneye, possibly a sora or a painted turtle. Originally an important native trail, used by fur traders from 1826-1846. When the Cariboo Gold Rush was at its height (1858-1864), the trail was again used by gold seekers, cattlemen and businessmen. The tour will include the site where the trail crossed Aeneas Creek, the 50 acre Priest Camp Historic Park, which was the Brigade Trail’s most important encampment site and Summerland’s Linear Park named “Fur Brigade Trail Linear Park”. The tour terminates at “L’Arbre Seul” a lookout site with one of the best views of Okanagan Lake. The tour will use a Gold Field Travel Guide map that was published in San Francisco in 1858.
